Activities & Achievments

WORK WITH GOVERNMENT OF INDIA – MINISTRY OF AGRICULTURE, DEPARTMENT OF ANIMAL HUSBANDRY:

Since the inception of the Indigenous Horse Society of India , we have worked on the following issues with the Government of India:

  • Lifting of export ban of indigenous horses – Until 1999 indigenous horses were on a list banned from export by both the Ministry of Commerce and Agriculture. IHSI held a series of meetings with concerned officials and had the ban removed. Indigenous horses were placed on the restricted export list in the interests of the indigenous breeds of horses.
  • EU Disease Free Zone – IHSI has been pursuing the question of a disease free zone to help export of horses to the EU and proper surveillance.
  • Disease survey reports - Regular input and information has been submitted to the Ministry in regard to disease survey report and status of India thereof to the OIE.
  • National Equine Development Board – This Board was dead for almost 20 years; due to regular pursuance by the IHSI, the Board was reconstituted.
  • Grants for indigenous horses – Till the year 2002, Ministry of Agriculture and Planning Commission of India had no scheme and provision for indigenous horses. Through the efforts of IHSI financial assistance has been granted and a scheme to preserve the indigenous horses came into existence.
  • NRCE Hisar

a) Due to the efforts of IHSI, NRCE Hisar agreed to do medical tests of indigenous horses at reduced rates.
b) Assisted by IHSI, NRCE conducted blood tests on 78 horses at Dundlod, Nawalgarh and Laxmangarh.
c} Semen of True to Breed Marwari Stallion was collected from Marwari Bloodline horses in Dundlod stables of for cryopreservation. Initiated in April 2006 and ongoing.

  • Census of Indigenous Horses: Until 18th Livestock Census, horses were not polled according to breed. In the meeting of 5th April 2006, IHSI explained the requirement and importance of breed-wise poll of indigenous breed of horses. As a result the 18th Livestock Census has been done breed-wise.
