Zanskari ponies are native of Zanskar valley, Ladakh of J & K. The predominant body colour is grey and others are brown and bay. The horses are known for their ruggedness, ability to withstand extreme cold climates, work tirelessly, run in abandon and carry loads at high altitudes. These horses have predominant eyes and uniform gait. A heavy and long tail is characteristic of this breed. The body hair are long and glossy. Only a few hundred horses at present exist in the Zanskar and other valleys of Ladakh. Large scale breeding with nondescript ponies has led to the endangerment of this breed through selective breeding. Propagation of this breed through area breeding program and latest reproductive techniques like artificial insemination is also being taken up by FRL very soon.
